UT3 crash when trying to load game

I installed UT3 without issue. However, I have never been able to run the game successfully. Each time I try, there is a 3-5 second delay at which point I receive a Windows error dialog that UT3 has encountered a problem and needs to close.
The specific listed error is:
AppName: ut3.exe AppVer 0.0.0.0 ModName: kernel32.dll
ModVer: 5.1.2600.3119
Offset: 00012a5b
After closing that one, a second follows it immediately:
AppName: ut3.exe AppVer: 0.0.0.0 ModName: ut3.exe
ModVer: 0.0.0.0
Offset: 00d50fd7
The computer is:
- Athlon XP 1800+
- 1GB RAM
- GeForce Ti 4200 (Driver: Nvidia 6.14.10.9371)
- Windows XP SP2 with all security updates and hotfixes
- DirectX 9.0c runtime
