Billy and Mandy, Autosave doesn't work...

I played The grim adventures of billy and mandy (PS2) for about an hour in story mode. I then hit the start button, then the quit option. It stated that it was auotsaving. However when I turned the system back on the following day and went back into story mode, it started me back out at the beginning of the story.
What gives?
