Hello,

I have a fairly decent computer, but am experiencing difficulties with the game. It took a VERY long time to install (several hours). When it finally did finish installing, I immediately noticed choppy video. The main menu even appears sluggish during the animation. I doubt the problem is due to inferior hardware because I've played countless other games with this same computer, including FEAR, Half Life 2, and various other extremely graphics intensive games without any problems whatsoever. During some of the cutscenes, the volume and everything runs smoothly, but during character-driven scenes, there's no volume whatsoever and at times appears to lock up for up to two or three seconds at a time. While actually playing the game (controlling the character, firing weapons, etc...), there is also no sound whatsoever and at times is also sluggish or choppy.

My computer specs are the following (copy and paste from dxdiag):

------------------
System Information
------------------
Operating System: Windows XP Professional (5.1, Build 2600) Service Pack 2 (2600.xpsp_sp2_gdr.070227-2254)
Language: English (Regional Setting: English)
System Manufacturer: Dell Inc.
System Model: Dimension XPS
BIOS: Phoenix ROM BIOS PLUS Version 1.10 A03
Processor: Intel(R) Pentium(R) 4 CPU 3.60GHz (2 CPUs)
Memory: 2046MB RAM
Page File: 1062MB used, 2875MB available
Windows Dir: C:\WINDOWS
DirectX Version: DirectX 9.0c (4.09.0000.0904)
DX Setup Parameters: Not found
DxDiag Version: 5.03.2600.2180 32bit Unicode

My video card is an NVIDIA 7950 GT video card. The graphics card features 512MB of memory. My sound card is the SB Audigy 2 ZS Audio [C8C0].

I tried changing the resolution, but didn't notice any changes in the sound; there's still none to be heard.

Thank you for your assistance.

I just have some more information which may or may not prove useful. When I purchased Stranglehold, I also purchased the game called STALKER: Shadow of Chernobyl.

Regarding the several hours it took to install Stranglehold: I notice the game recommends 15 GB if hard drive space, which is a lot. I have plenty of space (about 35 GB free space remaining), but the 15 GB requirement can't be the reason it installed so slowly because STALKER is a 10GB requirement and it installed in only (approximately) 20 minutes. Stalker not only installed smoothly, but also runs smoothly as well. I've already logged about 5 hours in the game and haven't experienced a single problem. Stranglehold, on the other hand, still remains choppy and without any sound. Is it possible my DVD is defective?

It definitely sounds like something got hosed during the install. Have you tried an uninstall and reinstall of the game? Make sure that you're installing the game using an administrator level account and that any programs that use real-time file scanning (such as anti-virus, anti-spyware, and anti-adware programs) are disabled or shut down completely before the install.

Hello

I just finished playing STALKER. It was a very good game. I beat it all three ways (three possible endings) and the game ran smoothly without a single crash error. In fact, I don't remember the last time I had trouble running any game on this machine.

Anyway, so I uninstalled Stranglehold and reinstalled it to try again. The fresh install made no difference. The game is still very choppy and there's no sound whatsoever. The intro movies come in smooth and with perfect sound quality but the actual gameplay itself has no sound and lags very badly. I'm the only person that uses this computer and I take good care of it, so unless there's something special about this game in particular that is required to run it that isn't required in most other games, then I must have a faulty DVD. I spent about $60.00 on this game. What do I do? At the very least I should get my money back if they can't replace it with a new copy of the game. Unfortunately, Wal-Mart, where I purchased the game, doesn't allow you to return them if they've already been opened.

Any ideas or advice?

I tried playing the game, ignoring the choppiness and lack of sound, and after the first few shootouts the game crashed and gave me a repor error. There wasn't an option to save the error report that I'm aware of.

Thanks.
