There are a multitude of threads on the Stranglehold forums and elsewhere dealing with the PC demo crashing, blue-screening (with the nv4disp.dll error) or reseting computers, and it seems from the volume of posts that a whole lot of people are having these issues.

But since the threads are limited to the Stranglehold specific forums and have recieved no moderator replies, i figured i'd post the problem here as well.

My system is as follows:
AMD athlon x2 4400 processor
Nvidia 7900 GTX gpu
2 gigs ddr 3200 memory
X-Fi fatality soundcard
80 gig western digital harddrive

The problem is not limited to people (as shown by my system) with less than 2 gigs of ram, as many have speculated, and is not altered by Nvidia driver versions.

I've tried the most recent (September 10th) beta drivers, the bioshock specific drivers, and the release previous to that, and each one has produced the same results.

I've received blue screen crashes immediately upon loading the game, with the Nv4disp error, i've received lock-ups during the intro cinematic, followed by my moniter powering off, I've gotten error dialogues about "Rendering Thread Exceptions", and once i was able to enter the game proper, which then immediately crashed.

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

As was stated several times on the Stranglehold forums, Midway does not do official support via the forums. These forums are for users to help each other out.

So if a user knows the answer to this problem, please speak up! Otherwise, you'll need to go through official customer support, which can be reached via the link in the sticky thread above.

Good luck!

this is most definitely not related to forceware driver versions...

damn, that "2gb ram MANDATORY" thread in the "All things Stranglehold" forum almost had me fooled - i was ready to go get myself 2 gigs of ram tomorrow - but i would have been so d*** pissed if stranglehold still wouldn't run after that... besides, i don't really feel like i need 2 gb of ram yet, every game i've played so far was fine with me having only 1 gb - why is midway trying to convince us to buy more ram? ;D

first, my system specs:

Intel Core 2 Duo E6600 OCed @ 2 x 3.00 GHz (FSB 1333)
Asus P5B mainboard w/ Intel P965 Chipset
1 GB MDT DDR2-667 RAM (2 x 512 MB Dual Channel Mode)
XFX GeForce 7950GT 570M Extreme 512MB PCIe
200 GB Samsung harddrive (SATA2)
Windows XP SP2 w/ latest updates

i tried all the latest ForceWare versions (162.18 WHQL-certified, 163.44, 163.67, 163.69, 163.71) without success. different outcomes however, including lock-ups during the loading screen, BSOD's complaining about nv4_disp, and rendering thread exception error msg's.

a buddy of mine is running the demo without problems on his system which is nearly the same as mine:

Intel Core 2 Duo E6600 @ 2.40 GHz (FSB 1066)
Asus P5N32SLI w/ nForce 4 Chipset
2 GB G-Skill DDR2-800 RAM (2 x 1024 MB Dual Channel Mode)
XFX GeForce 7950GT 570M Extreme 512MB PCIe
500 GB Samsung harddrive (SATA2)
Windows XP SP2 slightly out-of-date

he is also using some outdated ForceWare driver which i may not have tried on my system yet, but i really don't think that the ForceWare drivers are responsible for this, since there are other people out there playing the game with v163.71 of the BETA drivers.

let's find a solution for this quick, i really wanna play this game, less than a minute of the demo (before it crashed again) was all the ingame action i've seen yet sad

/edit:
i've also tried running the game on a fresh installation of win xp sp2 with the most recent drivers for everything on my old 40 GB harddisk yesterday night... no success, same erros.

well i had the issue that everything worked fine, until i started a game. The HUD showed up, but everything else was black.
I have an ATI x1600 radeon and had the Omega drivers installed.
well the omega drivers seemed to be the problem. when i downloaded drivers from asus website ( i got an asus notebook ), everything worked fine.

hope it stays that way ;D

good luck to everybody still having problems with stranglehold!

I was more than a bit skeptical about the "2GB RAM MANDATORY" thread as well. So I tested one of my systems that was running Stranglehold fine by taking out 1GB RAM and leaving 1GB installed. Lo and behold, about 5 minutes into the game I got a black screen crash. Not suprisingly, putting the other GB of RAM in fixed the issue immediately and it has been back to normal since.

Looking at the process in task manager at various points during gameplay, it does appear that StrangleHold uses more than 1GB of RAM at certain times. I'm guessing that the pagefile isn't a factor here, since I had a one set up (about 2GB in size). Apparently, when you're out of physical memory the game process just gives up and dies a horrible blue or black death :-)

Hi

I had to registar to post this :-(

(I OWN THE BOXED RETAIL VERSION)

Anyway I have same issue as many others where by game goes to menue but when selecting to start a new game i just get a blank screen!! I have seen many things said including the 2 GIG MAND thread.

Well this is me
XP (fully updated)
7950GT driver version 162.18 and 163.71 (beta) tried
2 GIG RAM Dual channel
AMD 3000+ XP
Direct x fully updated
Sound card sound blaster fully updated

as you can see this is not a requirements issue!!

So has anyone who has managed to get to menu screen and select new game only to go to blank screen been able to get past that problem ? I have emailed tech support but have not recived a responce yet.

This is A typical of PC releases lately. This stinks. I pay my money i earn at work to play a game I can not play due to dodgey release.

Is it me or are most of the problems had by people using XP ? Vista users seem to be running the game ok or are they ?

Anyone even had a responce from tech support yet ?
Any mention of a patch/fix ?

I run all games no pros including BIO SHOCK (Awsome)
Medal of Honor airborne
Ghost recon advanced warfighter 2
ect ect

Everyone managed to get the game running then huh ?

Cause i still havent. I got a reply from tech support cool But the person behind the email just stated they could not find my direct x txt i had uploaded. I dont know why as I deff uploaded it and there is no error on the tech support submit/upload page. Mabey its s generic reply so tech support meat their promise of a reply within 24 hours because by stating something is missing from your tech support request they have replied within 24 hours liarliar . Now I will prolly have to wait 24 days for a proper responce angry

Im just bitchin as Im mad at spending my hard earnt cash on something thats as much use at present as a dam coaster cry

So has anyone who's posted in this thread (or anyware for that matter) managed to get past the menu screen and actualy play the game without the dreaded blank screen ?

Any sugestions ? Other than update ya GPU drivers and OS + Sound card ect. I have tried everything I can think of and Im a old gamer (yep i = old man gamer) but with htis comes experience at trying to work round issues like this which I have managed to in the past. This is what a forum is supposed to do, Offer poss work a rounds until the devs pull their finger from their a** and sort the issues many of us are experiencing.

Ok sorry moan over. Im off 2 bed. No chance of me staying up late playing Stranglehold now is their.

AMD 3000+ XP

You know... I wonder if this is the problem. For starters, it's not a dual-core CPU which is listed in the recommended system requirements present on the game box. There are no minimum requirements listed, but Cinder (a moderator) posted on the forums that they include a dual-core processor as well.

Currently, one of my systems that is running the game successfully contains a Pentium 4 (Prescott core) processor. While it is technically a single-core CPU, it has Hyperthreading technology built into it which may assist in regards to performance. However, one detail that is quite a bit different between the two processors and could be critical is support for the SSE2 instruction set. The Athlon XP processors simply don't support this and more and more games are utilizing it.

Chronicles of Riddick was another game that was originally released with SSE2 support enabled. This rendered Athlon XP processors unable to run the game. A patch was later released removing that requirement, but bear in mind that this was about 3 years ago when Athlon 64 processors were relatively new and XP processors were still being used extensively for gaming. Today that's just not the case.

I'm curious if Stranglehold on the PC utilizes SSE2. If so, this would explain why systems with Athlon XP processors crash when attempting to run the game. Granted, the game should be checking for this feature, giving you a message that it's unsupported on your CPU, and exiting gracefully. However, this wouldn't be the first time I had seen a game give up and die a crashing death because a particular hardware feature isn't supported.

@ neildittmar

Thank you for your responce.

However I do not believe that it has anything to do with the cpu issue as you stated as my bro can now run this game and he has a AMD 3000+ XP CPU also. The biggest difference between the two machines is he has VISTA and I XP. His GPU is a 7600GT mine a 7950GT.

So whilst i see where you are comming from I dont not believe for a sec its a dual CPU issue in the slightest.

(I also have Riddick and never had a single issue with it. I did not apply a patch its was straight out the box)

Anyone else got any Ideas ?

I see... oh well, it was worth a shot :-) Just trying to find some logical, reproducible reason why people are having trouble getting the game to run.

If you have a 64bit CPU, try running it in 64bit OS (like Vista64, or winXP x64)

Worked for me. Stranglehold isn't the only game I have to play in X64. Believe it or not, cs:source and Hl2:ep1 still freeze on winXP 32 bit, but run fine on x64. You can make a small partition on your hardrive (like 20GB) to install x64, then just dual boot. (without using strictly one OS or the other)

For those who are on Windows XP , I think the game issues are a result of Dual Core compatibility issues in 32 Bit operating systems. Since a 64 bit processor is being used in a 32 bit environment there is bound to be compatibility issues.

Please download the AMD Dual Core Processor Optimizer from here:

http://www.amd.com/us-en/Processors/TechnicalResources/0,,30_182_871_9706,00.html

And see if this helps the crashing.

Im having this trouble with the retail version also. This is what I found out thu.

i have mannaged to stop the black screen. (monitor not responding) Simply by changing my desktop res to 1024*768 and with the same res in game, But now im getting Stranglehold has encounted a problem and needs to close. But worst thing is, the game disables my nvidia drivers. when i went into display settings the res was on the lowest setting,, 600*somthing and the color bit was at 4bits. So im quite sure this is the problem with the game. Hope this can help some people

Im using the 163. nvidia drivers, new release.

My system specs are;
AMD 64 3500+
Asus k8v-x
Gainward 7800 gs 256mb agp gpu
2g ram
Windows XP pro SP2. Fully updated

These Specs run any other game fine on high settings. Medal of honor airborne, bioshock etc
