Wii MK:A can't play multiplayer, can't select character?

Just picked up MK:A for the Wii from Best Buy today, specifically to play with my wife, and I believe I have either a technical problem or a software bug that won't allow me to play two-player mode.
First off, I'm not an idiot, I'm a 25 year old computer programmer, and yes, all four of my remotes have been resynchronized, new batteries, and I have tested them against my other multiplayer games.
I can turn on the Wii, and before I enter the game, or after (tried both) open the home menu, reconnect the remotes (so the second controller is activated and the second blue light is glowing). I can go to versus mode and select a character from the first player, but I get no response from the second controller, even though all signs point to it being on and active.
Also, I cannot select or even get the red cursor around the character on the far right towards the bottom (the blue ice looking guy).
Please tell me I'm not the only one having these problems.

Ok, nevermind, apparently I am an effin' moron. Took me three hours to figure out I had the wireless receiver to my wavebird plugged in, and it defaulted control to that (even though it wasn't turned on) instead of my Wii remote.

If you're talking about the bald guy that looks like he's made out of blue puzzle pieces, that is a Kreate-a-Fighter. You must first make one before you can select that spot on the screen. When you do, you will play as your Kreate-a-Fighter.

If your second controller doesn't have a nun chuck attachment, then it won't work. That's because you need that to play the game.

I'm also an idiot. Thanks for posting. I was having the same problem, and driving myself nuts trying to figure it out. It never occurred to me to simply unplug the wavebird receiver. Maybe next I'll teach myself how to make fire.
