How to Install and Run Area 51 on Vista
|
Like many other things with Vista, I was bummed to discover the Area 51 setup would terminate when clicking next after specifying the path. I figured there had to be a workaround. I've seen other posts here with people reporting the same problem and no resolutions. Well, I figured out a solution, so let's get to it!
I'm leaving out some of the minutia...if you don't know how to create folders and set permissions, you can learn on your own like I did.
- Create the Program Files\Midway Games\Area 51 folders.
- Give yourself full control permissions on the Program Files\Midway Games folder
- With Area 51 Disc 1 in the cd\dvd drive, open a command prompt window. Type in the letter of the drive, followed by a colon and press Enter. You should now have a prompt starting with the drive letter.
- Type in the following command line and press Enter:msiexec /i "area 51(R).msi" /qb
- After the installation completes, run the sfdrvup.exe file and reboot the system when prompted. The sfdrvup.exe download link is pretty easy to find on Midway's site, but sorry I don't have it here.
- Click the right mouse button on the Area 51 icon and select Properties. Check the Run as Administrator option and click Apply\OK
The adminstrator shield almost looks like a tear drop coming out of the Alien's eye!
I've seen official posts that claim Area 51 will not run on Vista.
That is not true for the 32 bit version. Even the 64 bit version should be able to run it.
Launch the game and have fun!
Why was the setup failing before?
The setup is aborting because the msi file is not digitally signed. Vista will not allow un-signed msi files to create folders in program files (or much of anywhere else for that matter). Because setup couldn't create folders, it had nowhere to install files and therefore aborted the installation.
Everyone...enjoy!

i never had to do any of that to get mine to work, all i had to do was put run as administrator. even before that it still worked. only problem i was experiencing was when the cut-scene with the casefile sitting there saying "ethan cole" and the guy from X Files is supose to talk. but somehow i fixed that. but i only did 2 of the things u said.
and that was put run as administrator and grant full permission to the folder and such.

I followed your instructions up to step 4 and the installation will not run. Just a window that is titled Windows Installer, with some commands, but I'm not sure what to do with them.
A little more help if its not too much?

Hi I'm new so I don't really know how to do all this Forum stuff but I need help.
but, I did what you said and it says "please wait while Windows configures Area 51(R)"
and then a minute or so through it I get the Error Message:
"Error 1305.Error reading from file E:\program files\Midway Games\Area 51\A51.msg. Verify that the file exists and that you can access it.
It does exist, it's there. So I don't understand why the installer can't access it. All the Folders in the path, I've given full permission to.
Anyone have any ideas?

well thanks but it would seem that the people on that board seem to be having trouble with it on XP. (they were talking about whether they were running "XP32" or "XP64")
(or maybe I'm just retarded)
and I'm having trouble with Vista.
(Back when I still had XP it played just fine.)
haha
but thanks anyway.
