Same problem here as with others having stuttering game issues. Thought I'd make a new post anyway, since I've drawn out a large explination and also because I think I might have a sound problem as well, but it could be related to the jumping issue.

My game has the very stuttery jumping that has nothing to do with FPS at all since it runs fine sometimes and it runs awful and jumpy other times. The jumping is also sporadic and not like it's a video slow down type of thing. Along with the jumping I notice that the sounds in the game pop and click along with the stuttering and jumping, like it would with two or three virus scanners are running in the background simultaneously bogging down every aspect of the computer while trying to play the game. And on top of all of that, when messing with my sound settings (turning on and off all aspects of hardware support), I noticed that none of the settings did anything at all... In fact, during the game it sounds like all the sound hardware options turn themselves on and off at will. For example, sometimes people will be speaking with an echo inside of a room, then not a moment later they'll be speaking like they're talking right into my ear with no echo at all, and sometimes the sounds sound all crisp while other times they sound scratchy and raw...

I suspect the whole jumping problem is an issue with either my soundcard or just the sound in general with the game (and yes, I have fully updated drivers for everything). I've seen other posts with people saying "jumpy gameplay," or the like, that post their system specs with either a SounBlaster Audigy 2 ZS soundcard or a SoundBlaster Audigy 2 soundcard. Only difference is I don't see anyone saying ",I also have crazy ass sound going on during the jumpy gameplay," like in my case. I suspect it could be that people just aren't playing long enough to notice since the jumpiness makes the game pretty much unplayable. I've had other problems with games and Audigy 2 ZS cards in general, so it's not very surprising that this game would also have problems... just disapointing.

Hopefully a patch will come out to fix whatever it is that makes this jumpiness go away, sound issue or not, because just playing the first couple of parts of the game is enough to make me want to try to play through the jumpiness as long as I can stand it (shooting is VERY difficult with the jumpiness). Cool games with problems make me sad and happy at the same time. =(

I take it these forums aren't frequented very much. =(
Hopefully someone will come along and click this post and have an answer for me.

Identical problems here. The game is unplayable for me (or at least the enjoyment is ruined so I won't play it).

I have the sound problems and the stuttering video issues. It's a complete slideshow at times.

My system is:

P4 3GHZ
ATi X700 Pro PCI-E 256mb (5.10 cats)
SB Live! 24 Bit
1.5 GB 3200 DDR RAM
XP Home (SP2)

I played The Suffering at 1280 x 960 on that system with no problems. I can't even manage 1024 x 768 with TTB. Quake 4 and F.E.A.R.? No problems on that system.

Come to think of it, I played TTB demo at 1280 x 960 with no issues.

Hope somebody from the developers actually reads this board <tumbleweed rolls by>

Have you tried fiddling with the sound settings? It sounds (lol?) like a sound problem, try disabling sound altogether (test) or turning 3D buffers off.

I was having the same problems, but it seemed to be a sound thing. I exited the game and turned off my sound hardware acceleration and reduced my sample rate conversion quality to good. You don't have any sound directionallity but the game now works.

Turning off Sound Hardware Acceleration and setting the sampling down a notch worked for me too. It's a shame that these kind of steps are necessary just to get the game to a playable state. The lack of directional sound detracts from the overall immersion.

I wonder if there will be a patcg to address this? We can only hope I guess.

Thanks for tipping me off to the sound issues guys. In my case it was going to the Setup Suffering link in the Start Menu, and turning off Use 3D Sound Buffers option. My framerate has gone up at least 5x.

happy

Bravo, I'm gonna repost this with your quote and get it stickied or something. I did this and it works no ssssttttuuuterriinnnggggg movies or game and you're not disabling or reducing settings for your sound card. BTW, We need a poll if this is just Creative SB Audigy users or other brands/models too.
