No one knows, as far as I know this is a detail that has never been explained in the MK storyline. But saying this, I don't remember alot of the comic stuff so that detail might be in there...

Actually they didn't discuss it in there either. Not that it matters the comic books were not even close to canon (except for the Deception ones from what I hear).
