clancop posted:Come on, we can plainly see this was a case of "affirmative action) being applied to comic books. Don't get me wrong, I like colour among heroes, matter of fact Dr Light is one of my favourites (she is easily on Superman's level... SHE CAN KILL A SUN, DUDE!), but honestly, it gets annoying when you see the "Barack Obama" approach to heroes. So what? He makes a good GL because he is black? What about his experience, his beliefs, attitude towards the job? While I think John Stewart is by far a better "black guy" then Barack Obama, just because of race, he is given the role. He lacks "character", and his early appearances places more importance on his "blackness" then on who he really was. I love the fact that he is an "Uncle Tom" as they say, the Colin Powell of superheroes, but give me a little more. He is dull, lacks anima, simply just another soldier who's skin colour is more important than who he is underneath. On that note, that is EXACTLY why he was chosen for the JLU cartoons, because it would bring in African-American viewers, which it did very successfully. The DCU has many character of colour, why not pick one of them instead of a GL who lacks character? Off the top of my head, Black Lightning and Mr Terrific. Black Lightning easily has the power to stand toe to toe with most opponents, and a calculating political which gives him an edge with strategy over many opponents. Mr Terrific is great because he is not only a tech wizard, but one of the smartest minds in the DCU. Even Batman admits the guy's intellectual superiority and has made his recruitment into the JLA from the JSA a major issue with the reformation of the team after the One Year Later saga. Both are very well rounded characters, both are unique and interesting in their own ways, and both are good role models for African-American youth (how many things can you find wrong with Marvel's Black Panther?). If they are going to add a character for colour reasons, at least make it a good character.
