I thought rivals would mean they hate each other because of there different beliefs or because something happened in the past that lead to two guys hating each other. Not having the same or similar powers and characteristics.

I highly doubt they would leave a character out of the game because he or she doesn't have a good "rival" from the other faction. Just because Havik isn't iconic doesn't mean Joker won't be in the game. Joker is one of the most popular DC characters of all time.

neither would havik, hotaru, kabal or any character that doesnt have a big role
idk about liu kang either, this is supposed to be mk8 and liu kang is dead and for a dead guy, he shows up in these games often

they would likely want to keep the sides balanced out (especially if they try to enforce the faction split).
they wouldnt want to put a character on one side that has something, either mechanically or aesthetically, that the other does not.
Have you played MK before? Really I don't think that would even be an issue.

thought obviously they wouldn't want to put 2 of the same types of characers on both sides.. like sub-zero and Mr.Freeze[i think that's his name]] .. cuz it would be like havin the same character.. just on both sides with different appearances!

ive been reading a lot of these match-up topic posts and i dont think people really understand why batman and subzero are considered rivals, because i see a lot of..."lets have goro vs bane" or "killer croc vs reptile because there both reptiles". neither batman or sub-zero share similar attacks, looks, or fighting style. what they do share is the same ethical value, morale, and view on justice (excluding sub-zero's occasional fatality here and there ;P) but they are the same person in different universes.... so no! sub-zero rival should not be mr.freeze because they both deal with ice.

allow me to apologize the correct word for this is post is counterpart not rival. counterparts are not the same thing as rivals. boon said counterparts not rivals. so allow me to explain for those do not know the difference, counterparts are more like copies (think of clones) but with a different shell. like m&ms are all the same, except with different covers. kabal and flash will not work. kabal is a heartless clan leader and flash is a grown up child. yes, there both fast and could be considered rivals, but not counterparts. it makes sense for this game because there limiting the roster to only 20 or so characters, so that means each character is going be fully fleshed out and no copies each bringing they're own spice to the recipe of mk vs. dc, if it was done the way some of these people (no offence) chose the pair-ups; we'd have 10 characters with 2 alternate costumes, one for mk and another for dc. also i like whoever said scorpion vs. lobo because a lot of people on the posts put it as a matching just because.... i like your anti-hero reason. personally i feel scorpion i dare to say is closest to catwoman because they are both neutral self relying individuals. they can align with either good or evil depending on the cause, and they do not enlist the help of others. others enlist the help of them. plus catwoman is batman's rival as much as scorpion is subby's rival (lol barely noticed as i was writing this). im sorry for all those scorpion fans out there who cursing my name for comparing him to catwoman (personally i like her, and it be especially interesting if her whip is used. but some people dont like her idk y), but IMO that's who I really feel is his counterpart.

Oh I get what you meant... but Boon said they were picking the most iconic characters. I highly doubt they will leave anyone out they consider "iconic" just because they don't have a good counterpart or whatever. Bottom line is, they're not going to leave Joker out just because they don't want Havik in. People are looking way too much into this rival/counterpart thing. We're getting the most popular characters from each universe. Who cares if there's Mr Freeze vs Sub Zero, Lobo vs Scorpion or Havik vs Joker? The game isn't about one on one fights or counterparts. You're not going to play the game as Sub Zero and only fight Batman or whatever.
