For a while it has been thought that there were an infinite number of realms in Mortal Kombat. I do not believe this was ever truly confirmed by the MK team though. If it is then I am sorry but I need evidence and have never seen any of it mentioned. I kinda heard other people say it so I went along with them. The realms seen in the Nexus are only the six main ones. Some people believe those are the only ones but that is definately false. Those are only needed to gather the six kamidogu.
In Mortal Kombat: Armageddon's Krypt it has the arenas stored from places you visited during Konquest. While viewing the Reiko's War Room arena you can read a comment on it written by someone from the MK team like in everything else. It states that the room holda one map of every realm for Kahn and Reiko to make their plans out so they may attack it. If you go to the actual arena in practice or versus mode, you can count 18 maps. They are put in sections of 3 all over the walls. Though 3 of them seem to be missing in empty spaces, you can logically realise that two of the maps are placed on the front wall for viewing and the third map is placed on the floor where you fight for moving "chess pieces" to get an idea for what battle strategies they may use to attack with.
So would that mean there are 18 realms all-together? I could still be wrong but it makes sense.

It just makes a lot of sense to me and would totally be cool if I was right. It has never been officially told how many realms there are.
