Shang Tsung's Fireball

I noticed that in all of the 2D MK games, Shang Tsung's fireball was a skull encompased in flames. It evolved slightly in each game until his reappearence in MK:DA where it was a simple Fireball with no good impact. this also returned in MK:A. However, in MK:A and MK:SM's intros, you can clearly see him shooting a Skull Fireball at whomever, but it is completelly made of fire rather than being an actual flaming skull. During the fight with Shang Tsung in MK:SM it is seen as nothing more than a black blur surrounded by flames. Any thoughts on these developments in its use? What don't you like better? Or what do you hate the most?

the only time i seen gameplay of shang tsung using flame skulls was MK1 and MK2..2 games lol 1 game if you count him not being playable in mk1

The skull fireballs were awesome and better. Maybe they got rid of them because they were too similar to Quan's green magic skulls.
