ps2 discs are made from Digital Video Discs (DVD) the old playstation games are made from Compact discs (CD).
here is how much each can hold
CD=700 megabytes
DVD=4,700 megabytes (4.7 gigabytes)
WARNING: Math Ahead.
700 goes into 4,700 SIX(6) times with a remainder of 500. Chances are some games don't fillup the whole disc. So the programmers can more than likely put 7 classic games on a single ps2 disk.
Plus, i have mk1 on my pc and it's only 2 megs.
The only problem is mk3 and umk3 are just smaller versions of TRILOGY. Trilogy has all the same things, but with extras. The pragrammers might also think the customers will get bored with mk1 and mk2 and just play the better (in thier mind) games.
i knew it they only hold 5 gigs.
so now with ps3 discs holding 25 gigs that will mean a lot lot lot more fighting and characters!

WHAT About making a " Mortal kombat mega kollection" like sega did with sonic? the game would have:
MK 1
MK 2
MK 3
UMK 3
MK trilogy
MK 4
MK gold
MK Special forces
MK Mythologies: Sub-zero
And at last but not least

The Grind?! I've never heard of that. What's The Grind? Well your "Mortal Kombat mega kollection" sounds like an an awesome idea, except I'd replace The Grind with MK:Deception. And since PS3 games will be able to fit 5x more data, maybe add Shaolin Monks in it. (if it does fit, that is)

the ps2 dvd has 4.7 gb!! but ps3 blue ray disc has 50 gb! that means that they could put there every single game of MK! even those ones from gba!
the grind is a sort of unreal tournament , but as a third person shooter! with some MK characters!

and i am talking to a mega collection for ps2, not ps3! MKD has 4.3 gb! it's too big to be in the mega kollection!

the grind was only for arcades and not for home consoles!

i loved it, it had scorpion, sub-zero, noob saibot...!
go to www.gamespot.com and see if there is avaiable some info (in my opinion ign sucks)
