Shankdaddy brought out some suggestions for the Gauntlet series based on things that worked in "Dark Legacy," (http://forums.midway.com/general_discussion/b10703/29772950/p1/?6) so I wanted to start a thread just for Gaunlet series thoughts. It's one of our favorite properties around the the office here, so let me ask you:

A) What have been your favorite/least favorite parts of previous Gauntlet games?
B) What would you want to see brought back or introduced in any new releases?

I love the series, I think the only problem is very little replay value to it.

The Action RPG genre is really changing and unfortunately Gauntlet needs to as well if it wants to survive.

Why not try out a Fableish approach to the series? Perhaps it can hit the sweet spot and reinvigorate the franchise? I picked up both Gauntlet titles available on Xbox Live and their really fun, although they have little re-playability and feel like more of the same thing. sad

I agree with you guys. Gauntlet is a great series but it was lacking somewhat in the replay value area.

I know I already mentioned it but I'll say it again here. Some things that I've noticed that add replay value to games are customization, online play and unlockable or downloadable content. You have to keep it fresh.

I think a new Gauntlet could be just what Midway needs to turn things around. Take a look at what made Dark Legacy great and expand on that. The cartoonish feel to it was actually appealing. Team attacks were funny at times but very cool. The progression of characters affected their appearance as well and their familiars which kept them from being dull over time.

Here are a few ideas I have to add replay value to a new Gauntlet game:

Quests: Missions for levels that you can do to change things up a bit. Finding keys and the exit is fun but if you want to make things interesting, make more elaborate quests in each level.

New Abilities: I think as you level a character in Gauntlet, when they hit certain level milestones they should unlock new abilities. Nothing too elaborate, but something every 10 or 15 levels or so would be cool.Of course the familiars and the upgrades to them would count in the list.

Different weapons: We don't need it to be another world of warcraft or anything, but I really liked spending the extra time in DL to find the legendary weapons. Problem is.. you use them once and they are gone. I think there should be several of these weapons that you can find for each character class. Or at least one each class with a different graphic for each color character. The weapons would obviously have a cool graphic for bragging rights, but also increase stats or grant certain abilities. Perhaps taking from DL, they could affect certain bosses at the begining of the fight?

One example: you find or quest for a rare wizard staff. It's yours forever. It acts just like your old staff but has a cooler graphic and adds some points to your magic. Also, when fighting a certain boss (dragon or something) it will do the special move when you first get there. That way, when grouping with people online it's good to have a wizard for that boss fight. Makes every class useful if each one has a legendary weapon or 2 to get. Of course it would have to be somewhat tough to get these. Perhaps collecting items from different areas of the game and doing some kind of quest for it... whatev.

Create a dungeon: I always thought it would be fun to have a create a dungeon feature. Gauntlet is so much fun running around dungeons with your friends, especially when you don't know where everything is. But once you learn all the maps, it's just repetitive. The boss fights are still fun for a while but they eventually get tedious as well. In the end, the only real fun is trying the different character classes and unlocking stuff for the completists out there.

But if you can customize your experience, or create challenges for your friends it adds a whole new world of replayability. People would find themselves spending hours on end just being creative, or checking out other people's dungeons. (provided there is online play)

I actually have a lot more in depth ideas for Gauntlet, but I feel like I've written a book already and from my own experience, TLDR is a common phrase in internet forums lol. However, if anyone is interested, reply and I'll keep them coming.

Wait, before we get ahead of ourselves here, does Midway still have control over the Gauntlet franchise considering the DS one was going to be published by Eidos?

Har Har Har!

Still doesn't confirm anything though, the details of the Eidos publishing were never fully disclosed were they? Anyway after going back to the XO version of Gauntlet (I'm bad with the series names sad ) it would be welcome to see a next gen iteration, hopefully not a Wii exclusive one like Sega does!

I had no idea this series was still in action. The first and only time I've played the Gauntlet series on NES.

Yeah, a new Gauntlet could be cool, but it needs to come out before Diablo III and be fun to play.

Here are some of my other game suggestions: new MK, Ready 2 Rumble Boxing: Round 3 (a good arcade boxing game would be cool), Unreal Championship 3 (for consoles), World Driver Championship 2 (the Wii is starving for realistic racing games).
It might sound funny, but how about you would make the new MK first for the arcade machine? With better graphics and all. I know it sounds risky, but think about it. It could replace Street Fighter IV in the arcades. Also it would be cool if the PC got a port this time. One of the reasons why MK was once so sucessful was because it was on all sorts of platforms. But otherwise I would say sports games sell pretty good so some good sports game would be good too. And maybe, just maybe you could do a new Killer Instinct, KI 3. Maybe Rare would be interested? Just a idea.

Maybe even ask Rare if they would allow you (Midway) to do Killer Instinct 3? I think the MK team could do both games, new MK and KI. Maybe even combine the two in a crossover, hence MK vs KI.
I personaly think it would be better to keep the games appart, but it's also just a idea.

Actually, forget what I was saying about KI, the MK team should only do the next MK. But after the MK, I think it would be really cool if you got the KI license from Rare and let the MK team make KI 3. I think they are capable of it.
MK vs DC 2, as much as I would rather see a 'proper' MK, would also sell good if I look at the sales figures of the first part. But rather make a true MK this time, most of us older fans really want it!

Great ideas, but lets try to keep this thread on topic. Gauntlet! Anyone have any ideas? Or have an opinion on what you thought was good/bad about previous Gauntlet games?

A good storyline is a must, same with varied level design and a good combat system and good enough graphics (more on the aesthetic side - I think a slightly cartoonish tone would be cool). Co-op is what Gauntlet is all about, so online play shouldn't miss out. There needs to be swarms of monsters and a lot of blood and guts, plus crude humour. Overall it's most important it's fun to play. The game should come out before Diablo III comes out, maybe a month or two before, to not get run over by Diablo III while still gain attention due to hype surrounding DIII. It should come out for both stronger consoles and you could later do a port for the PC too, but that must come out before Diablo III too.
