"No one alive can say they've played a good game involving the DC universe"
Yes, many can. It's called Justice League Heroes, however it pales in comparison to Marvel Ultimate Alliance. Simply because it has only 15 heroes.
Anyway, I love both Marvel and DC heroes equally but DC's universe is ten times more interesting than Marvel's if you read the comics. Also, Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, these are icons in a way Spider-Man and the Fantastic Four could never be.
I too am a long time MK fan, and a born DC fan. I remember sneaking the game into my friend's basement, because my parents wouldn't let me play it when I was younger. That said, I never expected this title to exist. Not in a million years. Sure, I may have made a joke about it when Marvel Vs. Street Fighter came out, but I wasn't serious.
THAT being said, I think it has potential to be fun. Once people get over the fact that it's not just MK anymore, it's something else entirely, i think we'll all have a more positive view.
I have to believe they're trying their best to make the best game possible. I believe they're holding out on us though. 20 characters? No mini-games? No fatalities? Please. What WILL there be? No stage hazards? That's my concern. Sacrificing so much better be worth it. This game better have the best gameplay imaginable to make up for all the things they seem to be cutting. They better not cut any corners.
Have they sold out? Absolutely. But that's what people do. Someone said "i grew up playing MK, but it looks like it didn't grow up with me." Eventually, MK has to start to appeal to younger audiences or it is going to fizzle out, because we are still its original audience. So betraying us is a forgivable sin to me, because it's simple logic that they need to start targeting a new demographic.
Untwist those panties and just have fun with what we DO get. You know you're going to buy it no matter what. I bet this forum was hell when Armageddon ditched the original fatality system.

then, maybe you should quit wasting your time discussing it
for those of us who will buy the game, no matter what, we don't need your negativity bringing our hopes down. we already know it won't be the best game ever, we don't need someone going out of their way to bring up how bad the game will be and how it's going to destroy the franchise.
i'm sure you have some friends on this forum, and as you can see, i'm brand spanking new. still, SOMEONE must agree with me when i say that what you're saying isn't necessary. i'm sure there've been 100 posts already about how shitty MKvDC will be. I'm sure there were 1000 posts about how shitty Armageddon would be. I'm sure there were 10000 about Deadly Alliance, back in the day, and so on. So, I don't get your point. The company is doing what it deems best for its future. Alienating its central fans? Sure, all for the greater good. They'll establish a brand new fan base and breathe life into the franchise. that's the hope, and it isn't impossible to think it could work.
I don't know about you, but I'm 21. How many more years do you think I'll be actively buying video games? They need to start going for the younger crowd.

No, I'm not going to quit discussing why I don't like this idea. My opinions have just as much right to be heard as those of people who are for the MK/DC idea. I fail to see how it's negative and unnecessary when I'm only expressing my point of view. If the roles were reversed and you were the one opposed to an idea of some kind, would you like it if someone said that what you were saying was negative and unnecessay? I sincerely doubt it. As one of the original fans of this series, I'm stating my opinion because I'm concerned with the direction that MK is going. If I didn't care about the series, I wouldn't be doing that. As for posts disagreeing with earlier versions of MK, there have been quite a few. I chalk that up to people simply having a difference of opinion like in the case of this upcoming title, which is to be expected. Also, video game aren't just for kids these days. Over half of all gamers are in their late twenties or older.

I am not suggesting your opinion, or anyone else's, doesn't matter. I just think that the opinion that "waah waah this game will suck because super heroes sucks and superman sucks and dc sucks and recently MK sucks and Ed Boon has sold us out for teenagers and why can't we have fatalities waaaaaah" have all been heard before.
I respect that you're pissed. For a few days, I was furious. but I am trying to be open-minded now until more things come through the pipes, because I don't want to look like an ass if the game is pretty decent, and there's no point to make a big deal about it if the game isn't that great. Especially since that bandwagon seems to be full without me.
That's all I mean. Rather than complain and predict how fast MKvDC will bring about the demise of the MK franchise (like undoubtedly all other games in the MK series in the last decade were predicted to as well), let's start offering up ideas. Let's discuss the possibilities. Speculate on what could make this game good, bad, etc. Ask some questions and try to get them heard, like "why only 20 characters?"
Just MY 2 cents.

I have nothing against DC and I've been a big Batman fan for ages. This is merely a bad idea to mix the two because they're incompatible and don't belong in the same game. So "waahh" is the opinion of those who don't like the game huh? Criticism in a case like this is to be expected (especially for a controversial idea like MK/DC), and I don't consider either side going "waahh" about it.

Yeah, whatever. If this were done before Street Fighter Vs. Marvel everyone would be sucking Ed Boon's dick. People just like to be unhappy these days.
And yeah, I consider a majority of people's opinions about this game "waah" because that is my interpretation of people who write the game off before even a single fucking screenshot comes out. People who say "i wont buy it" without ever trying it, or even watching gameplay or reading reviews and previews. People who spend their time on a forum complaining about a game they already prematurely committed to not buy. People who don't like the idea because of its alleged "incompatibility". In SFvM one might have a battle of the Hulk vs. Chun Li. You think some powerless bitch with a bra on her head can take the hulk? No. Get over it, it's just a game, and it won't be canon with the DC world. They can do whatever they want. Given the circumstances, I'd say compatibility is not an issue.
And when you talk about compatibility, you're referring to "Fatalities" being discluded by chance... I've said it in another thread, and I'll say it here. This game is a fighting game with characters from the DC universe, and the MK universe. It is NOT MK. Therefore, it does not get fatalities. Let it get its own damn thing.
I respect that criticism needs to be heard, but when it goes beyond the realm of constructive, that's just unnecessary.

If someone feels something is a bad idea when they see it, they're going to object. It's just that simple. There's also a lot more going on than issues of incompatability too.

Some of the other reasons are:
1. They're not sure if this game will be canon, something upsetting to fans of this series and its ongoing story
2. This title puts answers to what happened after MKA on hold
3. This idea's a risky move due to ongoing financial troubles for Midway
4. It's a step in the wrong direction after some of the mistakes that were made with MKA, which was a decent game but with some serious flaws (rushed product, cheaply done endings, post game bios which were promised and later cancelled)
5. Although a lot of people on this website like the idea, it's been met with rather mixed reviews just about everywhere
6. Toning down the violence and removing fatalities has disappointed a lot of fans
7. The promise of a newer and darker MK with a mostly new cast to bring in a new era isn't being fulfilled through this controversial idea
8. Quite a few fans who are opposed to this idea will speak with their wallets when it comes out, something that will cause even more financial trouble for Midway

1. The game won't be canon. If it does well, it'll be its own franchise. If it fails, it'll be ignored. It'll stay out of the MK universe because, no matter what, that would piss people off. I am repeating myself again here, sorry.
2. Yeah, but to be honest, the story to me has never been the strongest thing about MK games. I can wait a few more years for a worthy successor, if I have to. Don't get me wrong, story is important, but... meh, i'm not on the edge of my seat waiting to see what happened after Armageddon.
3. Midway is taking a gamble it may ultimately win, with or without our support. Not only is it bringing in the most loyal fans, but also new fans. Fans to DC, fans specifically to Batman, Sub Zero, and a young generation who is new to MK and can access it now that it is T rated.
4. I don't get the idea that MKvDC is being rushed. I think the characters are all finished and done, because I read that Ed Boon wanted to get DC's approval with that out of the way as soon as possible. Also, the fact that so much is not being included (additional characters, game modes, etc.) means we can probably expect a pretty dedicated analysis of each character.
5. Mixed reviews meet with all successful franchises decisions to try something new.
6. It has disappointed fans but they'll warm up to it once it hits them that this is not a MK game, it's an MKvDC game. It's something new, and Fatalities are only for MK.
7. Well Boon has said that the game will be darker and grittier than the others, without being more violent. We'll just have to wait and see. If this one can't do it, the direct sequel in 2010 (my prediction) can.
8. I disagree. I think many people will buy the game out of curiosity. Many will buy it out of loyalty to MK. Some will out of loyalty to DC. It depends on reviews, really. And publicity. I think it'll do AT LEAST better than Armageddon did.

Another reason why is this:
9. Nearly every superhero game (especially from the DC side) has been awful. The best Batman game ever was probably Batman: Rise of Sin Tzu, and that was so-so at best.
As for that and my previous eight observations, I'll add a tenth and personal one:
10. MK has made several mistakes in the past few years, some internal problems brought on by self-inflicted wounds. There was another series which did that to itself last year and kicked the bucket. It was the TV and film franchise Highlander.
There is one thing I'll readily admit. There's no way to tell what'll happen to this game just yet. Maybe it'll sell, maybe it won't. If it does sell and is well accepted, I'll admit that I was wrong in my prediction that it'll tank. I still won't like the game for the reasons listed though.

Oktavian posted: This is by far the worst decision they could have possibly taken.
I understand DC is a big-name company, and so is WB... but that doesn't mean that it will mesh well with MK.
There is not a single person alive who can say they've ever played a decent game involving the DC universe.
Midway had us all thinking that they were starting a new MK franchise from scratch, not this crap. MK-DC should not be a franchise, it should be a mere side project to make way for the actual MK game, kinda how Shaolin Monks was to Armageddon.
They are imitating the competition, that's all. Some years ago, Street Fighter and Mortal Kombat were head to head... Somewhere down the line MK began to lose its fans (i'd say right after MK:Gold), yet Street Fighter reinvented itself by bringing in Marvel Comics characters. So now, Midway wants to imitate Capcom, by bringing Marvel's competition into the MK universe. Lame. Whatever happened to being a leader? Whatever happened to that creative mind that came up with the idea of a fatality? I'll tell you what happened to it: It became lazy.
Hear me when I say this: Warner Brothers and DC, are both VERY aware of the fact that MK is a promising franchise. But they are also aware of the fact that the DC universe will never have a great game. But, since they can't really lose in this deal, they went ahead with it.
All that's going to happen is, DC will finally have an "OK" game, and Mortal Kombat is gonna have a second "OK" game, instead of the beast we've all been expecting it to be. So Midway will lose money, DC will gain money. In the long run this is going to hurt Midway. Specifically Boon.
I guess MK wasn't meant to last forever. They absolutely messed it up in Armageddon by stripping characters of their individuality with removing the ORIGINAL fatalities for each character. Till this day, the best MK games are MK Deception, MK2, and MK Trilogy. Armageddon could have been great, but they totally rushed it.
And this here, horrible business decision, has forced me to crown MK Deception the last good MK game.
I'm not sure how they convinced them to go along with this, but trust me, right now Midway is slowly bending over in front of the Time-Warner Conglomerate. And trust me: this IS GOING TO HURT.
Thank you to anyone and everyone who actually cared enough to read this whole thing. I needed to vent.
totallt agree with you.
you analisis is realistical,lucid,credible,reliable...do you predict future?

In regards to any decent DC games previously released, I thought I'd add this. Probably the best one for me was Batman: Rise of Sin Tzu, and it definitely wasn't decent. Probably so-so at best.

I totally agree with you Oktavian.I can't believe what they did.How can you combine them.Like i said in a previous post, they ruined it since MK4.They took the wrong way.Why are they not selling the franchise to another company?Because these idiots won't do anything in the next 200 years.Like others say, MK is not MK anymore. Why can't they make an MK game for PC with multiplayer and to try and bring the franchise up and maybe to replace other games in competitions like WCG?The questions are pointless because they are going down.
