Did Ed Boon really say that MK8 would be completely void of any humor whatsoever? I don't mind them "cutting down" on the humor to make it feel more gritty, but seriously, it just wouldn't be MK without the humor.

He said MK8 would be dark. Doesn't mean there won't be "dark" humor. To best describe dark humor...it's like throwing a beaver in a woodchipper.

The silliness of the MK games was lost following the 2D games. I wouldn't mind some dark humor, though.

No MK just wouldn't be the same without any humor in it. In fact the previous games on consoles (MK: DA and UP) don't have as much humor as MK2 - MK3 (MK4 sucked and MK1 had no humor) and look how we complain we liked the classics better. So YES to the Gory Dark MK game, but with humor.

Of course, MK1 didn't have any humor because of the fact it was brand new in the day. MK2 started the trend of different humor. MK3 kontinued it. MK4 had some dark humor, like Quan Chi's leg fatality. 
Then came MK:DA. That game didn't have much humor, unless you look to Quan Chi's fatality.  OMG, the head pull was so lame.
MK:D did have Bo Rai Cho's fatalities, but those were just fart jokes.
MK:A didn't have any humor, not much of a storyline, but it did have damn near every single player imaginable from MK history, with the option of making your own kharacters as well. (I mean, how hard is it to make tremor but with the MK Ninja preset, turn it brownish-orange, give him some moves like foot-stomp or tombstone drop, the reddish-looking fireball, etc? ) Of course, Kreate-a-Fatality was the sickest joke of all I guess, so I guess it had some humor in it at our expense.
MK8, bring back friendships, but darker friendships, not just lame-o friendships (Liu Kang discoball anyone?). Just imagine friendships in 3-D.  Did you guys see the "cooking with Scorpion" video? Scorpion's friendship could be similar to that, where all of a sudden, a kitchen table appears that has some food on it, the fruity music kicks in, the announcer announces what you'll see on "Cooking With Scorpion", but instead of chopping a watermelon, Scorpion misses and accidentally chops off his opponent's arm. Other friendships can be like this. If Kung Lao returns, there should be a remake of his "Hat Throw" friendship with the dog, except instead of the dog getting hurt, the hat rebounds sideways and lodges in the opponent's head like his fatality from MK:DA (except, of course, instead of retrieving his hat, he hangs his head in shame). DARK HUMOR!

I've always wanted to see something similar to your friendship concept, but this a little different....
You could do a friendship and leave it at that, or...do a friendship Reversal! For example, Baraka's MK 2 Friendship:
Baraka gives a gift to the opponent, but if you reverse it....BOOM!!!
I forget who said it, but you can't spell Slaughter withought Laughter...

LOL at Bo Rai Cho, and LOL at the Slaughter Laughter observation.
I like the friendship reversal idea as well. This way, Scorpion could do his cooking bit like normal, but if reversed, then Scorpion misses the watermelon. Etc. Best of both worlds.
