We've kicked this idea around briefly in the past, but it hasn't ever really gone anywhere, for a few reasons. The biggest one is that on forums where I've seen this in the past, there becomes a huge separation between "them" and "us". The "us" being the people on the long-time-user forum, and the "them" being the newer people. The boards then tend to segment themselves even further and become extremely "clique-ish". Groups stop talking to one another, and it hurts forum traffic overall. It tends to drive the new people away, as well, in the end - because the "established" users don't want to talk to the new people, they only want to talk to the *cool* people that have the extra priveleges they do.

I'm still open to having my mind changed, but as of now, I don't think it would be a very good idea.

The Sheylord has spoken, so it is done.

Pfffft, who cares what you have to say! you only have -49,210 posts! not_talking tongue ....you know I'm kidding right?....Please don't ban me for that ha ha.

Sheyla is probably right about this, I would hate for people to be treating new members badly, and trying to exclude them or make them feel unwelcome.

I've seen that happening already.

But we aren't really getting much traffic. We don't get new people that often, and all that we do get fall under three categories.

The first is the flamer/n00b. Due to this person's actions, he or she will automatically be rejected by the community. Some of these are even people that make double accounts (-testament-, Kahn_Kahn) just to flame, spam, and make complete asses of themself.

The second is the invisible one. These users sign on, make a couple posts (or maybe even none at all), and then quietly never come back.

The third is the idiot. These users are previous users are have for some reason logged off and forgotten his or her password. They then make a new account, trying to say that they've been here but can't use their previous are far more famous username because of a forgotten password. Yet, these people don't realize that there are several ways to retain his or her password, including a certain option that asks you if you have forgotten your password. These users are also hated.

The other thing is that most people here have been here for a while, and people seem to like them. Most new users are already excluded, and we have made our own cliques. Its high school without the work.

Right now, we're getting between 800-1000 posts per day. We have around 200 different users logging in daily, and are getting about 25 new accounts created every day. Frankly, we're right exactly where I expect us to be at this point in our message cycle.

You know when the "I hate newbs!" and "We don't get any good new users!" complaints started? 3 months after the forums went live. And it's continued non-stop ever since.

Everyone was a new person here at one time or another. And, unless you registered within the first month, YOU were the one being complained about at one point. You know how to get new people to hang around and become part of the community? Welcome them! Answer their questions in sincerity, not with the snide and sarcastic crap I see from some people!

I can enforce the rules, but if you want the atmosphere to change, guess who has to do it? That's right..you do.

Shelya makes a good point. I recently went through some of the newer people's profiles. They have a lot of watching users, but they tend to consist of mainly other new users. There is already a sort of detachment that's happening, and we need to try to break that. A lot of new users don't understand how internet forums work, so we have to try to help them to figure out how it works. I've made my share of stupid mistakes in the past, but I've learned from them, and that's how all the new users should grow.

These numbers mean nothing. What counts is active users. That's the statistic I want to see

Perhaps we aren't getting any active newbies because they think that the veterans will treat them badly. Maybe if they see some kindness in the posts, we'll get more.

True. But that's not our fault if they are too afraid to join the crowd.

How can we encourage them to join in? better still, how can we encourage people older then 12 to join in?

Even truer. I can't stand the younglings like [edited]. Such arrogance enrages me.

I think it's not a good idea. Just because you have high posts doesn't change your maturity.

And you wonder why the don't want to join the crowd. Maybe, instead of getting enraged, send them a PM. Tell them what about them annoys you in a calm and friendly way. Trust me. It helps a lot.
