People are supposed to join to discuss Midway games, not pretend they are storming a nearby town so you can buy a new character. if you want to role play, go buy World of Warcraft or Dungeons and Dragons.

I don't want to have to go out and buy the game and then pay to play. That isn't right.

Yeah, the companies should just have to pay for the server space, bandwidth, customer service and developing of the game out of their own pocket! That'll encourage them to make more games!

Well, how is Guild Wars still being able to pay for the servers? Companies that sell tons of games everyday should be able to pay the servers.

Guild Wars has a much smaller fan base than any of the current MMORPG leaders - and their development costs were FAR lower. They also sell expansions that are full-price, stand-alones. All (as far as I'm aware, anyway) of the subscription games release expansions for a much lower price, or free. Lag issues are rampant, from what I hear, and the customer service they can afford to offer is nowhere near the level of the subscription games.
Puzzle Pirates is doing some interesting experiments in the area of non-monthly-subscription-based games, and I do hope their business model can succeed, because it would open up some very good possibilities for other games. But the current MMORPGs could not have been green-lighted for devolopment without a subscription fee, because the people that are going to sink tens of millions of dollars into making a game are NOT going to do it with a business model that doesn't have a good chance of returning a profit.
Game companies are not primarily in business to entertain the public. They are there to make money. They do this by being good at entertaining people, true. But that's a means to an end, not the end in itself. If subscriptions are needed to turn a profit, then subscriptions are what will happen in the industry. If someone else comes along with a better idea to turn more of a profit, that is the model that will take over. What works is what makes money, and what makes money is what works. If enough people weren't willing to pay the subscription prices, the companies would either find some other way to make their investment back, or they'd stop investing in the games.

Sheyla i'm surprised with you. Trying to argue about MMORPG's? Rare is the day someone's mind is changed on these topics. Its the biggest fanboy base there is (somehow edging out Midway games). I play Guild wars, and I love it. The only lag issues I notice are the first few days of a new exspansion due to over crowded serves. Oh n0es! GW only has 2 million people playing! It must be awful! But seriously, this is folly. RPG's on fourms = teh n00b. MMORPGs = teh m00t point. Also, I laugh at you all for calling GW an MMO. Instances people! Instances!

Hehe, you're right. So I will refrain from pointing out that the 2 million figure is copies sold, not individual accounts, if I recall correctly..and that includes the stand-alone expansion - which, presumably, was mostly bought by people already playing the original. Not that I'm dissing GW, mind you! It's just like comparing apples to oranges, to compare it to something like WoW or EQ. But..no one's mind is going to be changed, so I won't say a word.
