A warning to those thinking of purchasing the PS3 version of Stranglehold.

I have been anxiously waiting for the collectors edition of Stranglehold for the PS3 to come out. In fact I bought my PS3 in anticipation of having Hardboiled remastered in HD (I don't regret buying my PS3 at all by the way)
However Midway has totally dropped the ball on this release. After waiting months and months for it come out, I can tell you that while the collectors edition says it supports 1080i output on the back of the box. The game does not. The movie does but I'll get to that in a second. I have one of the HDTV's that does not support 720p so when a game tries to play in 720p it will revert to 480p on my TV. When I try to play Stranglehold it will only output in 480p.
Concerning the Movie, It does display at 1080, however the subtitles are so small on the screen that they are practically unreadable. I have seen some complaints that the picture quality isn't that great but thats the least of it's issues in my opinion. It was stated in this article here by senior vice president of marketing and chief marketing officer Steve Allison at Midway that Midway had "used the master digital tape from the film print and then ourselves converted it to support all HD resolutions, including 1080p" However the video has the same picture issues that plague the recent DVD release which is that the picture is actually stretched a little to fill the screen thus making the actors faces apear slightly wide. Perhaps this is an issue on the Master Digital Tape, but its an issue nonetheless and in comparison with the previous releases of the movie on Laserdisc and DVD is not correct.
Anyway I just wanted to let others out there know the issues. I am really disapointed in how Midway has handled this release and to be honest I doubt I will be buying anything from them in the future. If they figure out a way to fix the 1080i and the movie subtitles issue then perhaps I'll give them a second chance. But the only worse in opinion is if the movie had only been in 480p.

It's truly unfortunate. I had this title in my hands (pre-ordered) and decided to not pick it up specifically because Hard-Boiled would not be in native 1080p. Supporting HD resolutions does not mean that it is mastered at 1080p which is what I was hoping for and why I was willing to spend $70 on this game. Heck, I would have spent $70 on 1080p special edition Blu-Ray or HD DVD of the movie by itself.

Why would you not pick it up, didn't you have to pay for it upfront or put down a deposit?

I got an answer from Midway tech support about the movie and the game. Apparently the movie is only in 1080i here is what they said:
"Customer Support has just been notified by our QA department that there is a misprint on the box. Stranglehold for the PS3 is only viewable at 720p. The 1080i is in reference to the Hard Boiled movie in the Collector's Edition. In regards to the subtitles, this issue is being researched by development staff. Your incident is currently closed, but not forgotten. As soon as we have updates and/or patch options we will update our knowledgeable items referring to the issues at hand."
"Thank you for your response but I would like to add that Midway's senior vice president of marketing and chief marketing officer Steve Allison is quoted in an article in Newsweek here: http://blog.newsweek.com/blogs/levelup/archive/2007/08/01/midway-on-adding-hard-boiled-to-the-ps3-special-edition-of-stranglehold.aspx as saying "We used the master digital tape from the film print and then ourselves converted it to support all HD resolutions, including 1080p" not limited to 1080i as your packaging says so your company has made at least two mistakes in how you handled this game. Also you have had mods on the Midway forums that have posted many times assuring people that the movie would be in 1080p. Also the Xbox 360 version of the game came with resolutions up to 1080p so there is not reason that an equally capable system like the PS3 should not have those game resolutions as well. Since this is not what I wanted or expected to buy I will be returning the game to the store where I bought it from. And if they will not allow me to get a refund I will be expecting one from Midway.
I originally bought my Playstation 3 because the collectors edition was coming out with Hardboiled in 1080P. I put down over seventy dollars to reserve the game over three months ago as I waited for the game and it was delayed at least three times. Then when it finally comes out it is not what Midway has claimed it to be. So you'll understand why this was a little more then an inconvenience for me and Midway has let me down in a HUGE way. If you'd like to add up the costs that over $600 I spent on a PS3 and then $70.00 for the collectors edition of Stranglhold. Money I would gladly have spent if the game had lived up to what the company promised. I will no longer be buying any games from your company and will make sure to tell others that your company misleads there customers about the products they are producing.
I would appreciate it if this was passed on to David Zucker your CEO who made a statement earlier today saying that PS3 Tech issues are over. http://www.gamasutra.com/php-bin/news_index.php?story=16091
He needs to know that he has a lot to prove to at least one customer that Midway really cares about their PS3 customers after shoddy treatment Stranglehold received.
I'll also add just so whatever tech is reading this that I think you guys did a fine job in getting back to me quickly so my anger is not aimed at you.
Thanks"

Out of curiousity, were you able to return the game to the store you bought it from? I have the same issues you have with it. I'm feeling a little ripped off and lied to, but I bought the game and Best Buy and I'm not sure I have a leg to stand on with them for a return. Perhaps if Midway would own up to their shoddy QA and marketing and release a bulletin to retailers to allow returns (hello, anyone at Midway? are you there? do you want to sell games to me in the future?)

I know they are out to turn a profit and the xBox 360 has the biggest audience but another example of PS3 owners getting the short end of the stick is the pre-order offer for Blacksite: Area 51.
Seems like if you pre-ordered the 360 version you got a free mic headset. Not so for PS3 pre-orders.
Sort of disappointing seeing as how Midway could have captured the PS3 market because their games are out now and other follow in later November.
PS3 owners have had to wait months for decent shooters and now that they are out some of us might figure wait another week or two and get a different game.
Too bad Midway didn't extend the same offer to PS3 pre-orders.

Hy
I was specially waiting for the PS 3-Version and i don`t have ANY problems.
Mayby because i have a FULL-HD Panasonic Plasma TV (42").
But i have also the X360-Version because the X360-Version came out 2 month erlyer, i think it was 2 month.
So if You have a FULL-HD-TV you can buy the PS 3-Version without ANY PROBLEMS (you can configurate in graphicsettings if you have Plasma, LCD, normal TV-NTSC or PAL, etc.)!
So thats only my personal expirience. For those guys wich havent already bought STRANGLEHOLD I would recomend you the PS 3-Version BECAUSE you get HARD BOILD as an BluRayDisc-Film!!!
But it`s everybodys own desicion.
see you

Hey buddy, screw off with your FULL HD digs. This has been covered exhaustively in countless other forums, the PS3 is supposed to be an HD device, compatible with HDTV's. NOT HDTV's bought in the last two years. Just because I had the ability to buy an HDTV years before you did, doesn't mean I should be penalized for early adopting, nor does it mean I should upgrade my perfectly good TV just for the PS3. EVERY other HD device I have works perfectly with my TV, but then they were all developed by people with the sense to use scalers.
That being said, it is incumbent upon developers to realize this flaw in the PS3 and accomadate it. They can make a Strangelhold that upscales to 1080i on the other machine, why not this one? Well, the box says it does, but thats just lies. Those of us with the early HDTV issue have learned to check boxes before we buy games to make sure they will look decent on our TV's. Unfortunately, Midway, whether in error or purposely, advertised 1080i on the box, thereby misleading people into thinking they were safe to buy it. Thanks Midway, enjoy the last $70 you're ever going to get out of me.

How tiny are those subtitles? Just curious, because I might get this game when I buy a PS3 next year.

Wait. I didn't see that. $70 is way too much. I'll try later when the price is much lower.

Given the short length of the game and all the issues with it, it won't belong before you can grab this used on Amazon or somewhere for at least half the price. I do have to admit though, as a mindless shoot-em up, this game is a lot of fun.

It's probably for the best I guess. I'm not getting a next-gen system until sometime in 2008 anyway. I'll at least have one by November, which will be time for Midway's MK8.

Yea, same here, I'm not sure which system I'm gonna get. PS3 if MKA is backwards compatible but if not then prolly a 360. The only games I really play are MK and SD vs Raw 07. And maybe I'll get the TNA when I get a system too.

I'll probably pick up Stranglehold when it hits the bargain bin or something. That's how I eventually acquired most of those rare PS1 pinball titles back in the day after all.
