I don't doubt that the game is playable with 1GB of RAM for some people. It all depends on specific hardware/software configuration I think. On one of my systems, the game is simply not stable on 1GB of RAM. This system has a P4 3.0Ghz CPU, 2GB (4x512MB) of RAM, and a 7800GS 256MB graphics card. My commit charge on boot in Windows XP is a mere 140MB. The game runs stable with 2GB of RAM installed. Simply taking out two sticks to drop the total memory down to 1GB results in a black screen crash about 10 minutes into the game. Putting the sticks back in returns the game to it's normal, stable state.
From what I've seen on the forums, most people that have problems with the game have only 1GB of RAM. In a couple cases, upgrading to 2GB immediately fixed the problem for some folks. I don't think anybody is telling "lies" as you put it. It's just the differences of hardware/software configurations showing through I think.
