The x1600 listed under the minimum specs you've posted doesn't quite mesh with the x1300 listed on the "recommended system requirements" published on the game box. Does your post represent an official retraction from Midway that the x1300 is not enough?

I mean, don't get me wrong... listing an x1600 with a 7800 certainly makes a lot more sense than the x1300. Considering that the Xbox 360 (with it's ATI graphics hardware) was the lead platform for Stranglehold, it's acceptable that a slightly lower range ATI card would match a slightly higher end nVidia card. In any case, some clarification would be appreciated.

Thanks :-)

This is how the back of the North American retail box reads exactly...

Enhanced for:
[dual-core] [online multiplayer 2-6]

Recommended System Requirements
[OS: Windows Vista/XP - SP2]
[processor: AMD Dual Core CPU]
[memory: 2 GB RAM, 15 GB free hard drive space]
[video card: ATI x1300 or higher, Nvidia 7800 or higher]

Increased performance will be noticed on more powerful systems.

There are no minimum system requirements posted on the box, just recommended.

It's starting to look like it. On that note, I can't ever remember a PC game not listing minimum system requirements on the retail game box. For reference, I've been playing PC games off and on for over 13 years.

Perhaps the reason these are listed as recommended and not minimum is because Midway would catch a lot of heat for releasing a PC game with requirements as high as this. For comparison, other contemporary games that utilize Unreal Engine 3 like Rainbow 6: Vegas and BioShock list single core processors, lower end graphics cards, and 1GB RAM as their minimum specifications. I'm not sure Stranglehold is doing anything more technically demanding than either of those games.

unfortunately, Vegas is taking a lot of flak from people thinking they can squeeze in with minimum specs and get "maximum" framerate out of the game.

from the very little about Bioshock i've seen... they're not better off.

the problem is a double edged knife. if they program a game to run "at max" on low end systems, people complain they're not making use of current hi-end tech... if they push the envelope and make use of high end tech... people complain the "reqs" are too high.

sure they scale with processors (500 fps with top end on some two year old game)... but to make a game truly scale... they have to push the high end AND the low end at the same time... the only way is to have incredible detail at high... and turn it down as you get to the low end... of course, then you get the people that complain the game is "too different" (they want at the low end, what the high end is getting).

Does Stranglehold make use of DirectX10?
If not I'd just get it right away instead of waiting until I have DirectX10 hardware.

To my knowledge, Stranglehold for PC is a straight up port of the Xbox 360 version with nothing added. Therefore, it does not take advantage of anything DirectX 10 / Shader Model 4.0 related. It is strictly a DirectX 9.0c / Shader Model 3.0 based game.

Thanks.
Didn't find any info about DX10 support elsewhere so I guess Strangehold is really DX9. Thats great, I'm looking forward to blasting away lots of badguys. happy

in the PC support topic i have posted that the minimum specs i believe to be inaccurate espcially regarding the CPU

reason , i have it working on my system

My specs

Operating System: Windows XP Professional Service Pack 2
Processor: AMD Athlon(tm) XP 2800+, MMX, 3DNow, ~2.1GHz (single core)
Graphics Card name: Radeon X1600 Series, Display Memory: 512.0 MB (AGP)
Memory: 2048MB RAM DDR400 (2 Gig)

so as long as you have 2 Gig ram minimum and a graphics card similar to mine in performance , and a 3ghz single core running windows xp sp2 it should run.

My graphics card was less than £100 in the UK

You actually don't need Service Pack 2 for that matter. Because I don't have Service Pack 2 for XP and the game runs fine on my machine.

My Machine:
Pentium IV 3.4GHZ HT
2GIG PC4200 DDR RAM
NVIDIA GeFORCE 7600GS 512MEG AGP 8X
250 GIG Hard Drive

Stranglehold runs with no problems.

Hey there guys,
I've just finished Stranglehold and now i can safely tell u how to play it without lags with only 1 gig ram!
First: It is playable with 1 gig ram. Everyone who says otherwise lies imho.
So if you have Windows XP but only one gig ram u just have to close all extra processes in your task manager.
target is to get about 250 mb ram usage in normal windows mode.
Furthermore you should deactivate your network cards if you just play single player mode.
Most important is to deactivate ur antivirusprog.
Update your graphic drivers and directx components.
If you do all these things I think you will be able to play with just one gig ram!

Johnny

My System:
Asus A8jp
1 gig ram
ATI x1700
Core 2 Duo T7200
Windows XP Pro.

btw.: as you can see you can also play Stranglehold on a Notebook!

that's quite a bit of work... you would need to do every reboot... i think it would be more advantageous to just get another stick of ram... they're pretty in-expensive.

yeah...maybe you're right, but I only have a laptop with 2 slots 4 ram. So I think both are used by 512 mb ram. So in my special case it wouldn't be so cheap to upgrade to 2 gig ram! wink

And btw, if u know the processes you have to close it's just a few seconds to get Stranglehold started! wink

Greetz
Johnny wink
