Thing about processors is, the way they're manufactured is that batches are made from great big silicon wafers and once they're completed, they're individually tested and "binned" depending on the max speed they can run at efficiently.

The low-end chips are often faster-rated chips that have been clocked down to fill an order...say NewEgg orders 5000 e6400s and all they have are 6800s...you guessed it, they clock em down and ship em. So when you don't at least try to OC (very, very carefully), you're wasting what you have, IMO

@ Koztah

I agree you do need to test. I had my system post at 3.8Ghz (stock is 2.4) but failed Orthos (real fast) and crashed Quake 4 after playing for 30 minutes or so. Quake 4 is locked at 60 frames even if you can go more (did not no this till later) it wont.

I tried other games while OC’d and still no extra frames. My 8800GTS more than handles the current games out there. dancing

I was able to get it rock stable @ 3.4GHz and on many games I played no extra frames. Till your cpu is pushed to the edge OCing the CPU doesn't matter unless your video card is lower end.

I played a demo of Ice Storm Fighters and that it a multithreaded game and it pushed the hardware to the limit. OCing the cpu and gpu helped there a lot.

However till your system needs the extra cycles you don't need to OC at least for gaming. The GPU handles a lot more of the load.

Service Pack 2
320 GB Hard Drive
Geforce 8500GT With 512 MB DDR2 ram
Nvidia Driver 162.18
Latest DirectX 9.0c august 2007 ver.
Game and Screen resolution both set at 1152 by 864
Demo runs smooth gonna buy game tommorow.
Even with my system in took a long time to load demo from initial screen, but then gameplay was excellent.Had to install the new video card,my original geforce 6200 with 256 megs shared would not run at any resolution.Note:I had my virus software shut down and Dsl modem disabled when i ran the demo.Don't know if I had to but I don't play online so I shut it down to save cpu usage.

holy smackers, a mod "bump"ing a thread... where has this world gone to? grin

well, i ordered the game... hasn't arrived yet... i was debating not getting it, since there's a lot of mention about SP being short, and i don't MP too often (if at all).

but you know... Chicago was my hometown... so i might just keep it.

anyway, on-topic...

i love the system "recommended" specs!!! tongue
