Let me state the obvious here: you just can’t make a John Woo game without Chow Yun Fat. Chow is nearly synonymous with Woo... The trifecta of A Better Tomorrow, The Killer, and Hard-Boiled defined Hong Kong action cinema, blasting their names into the action-movie hall of fame for all time. When we talk about the “trademark moves” that are in Stranglehold … the two-guns at once… the diving through the air… the point-blank pistol to the face… these are trademarks for Chow just as much as they are for Woo.
And you especially can’t make a game based on Hard-Boiled without Chow! Just like Harrison Ford is Indiana Jones, and Al Pacino is Scarface, Chow Yun Fat is Inspector Tequila in our minds. He’s the only man that could come back to make the video game sequel! There have been other people to shoot two pistols at once… and there have been other people to ride a zip-line down into a warehouse shooting bad guys with an SMG. But Chow did it first, he did it best, and we’ll never think differently.
But it’s not just that Chow looks badass shooting guys (which he does). But Chow always plays very human, very vulnerable characters. He gets shot. He dives into cover. He pulls off crazy stunts, but only by the skin of his teeth. And this makes him an ideal star for a video game. Because when you’re playing a game (this is any game mind you), you don’t want the game to feel like it handed you a victory. You want to feel like you had to fight for it, had to claw for it, and had to do some pretty awesome stuff to win.
And for me there’s no one better for that than Chow Yun Fat playing Inspector Tequila. When he gets shot in Stranglehold, he bleeds. When a bullet strikes nearby, he winces. He’s not wearing power-armor… or using a force-field.... Tequila is just a man, but he’s pushed to do extraordinary things.
