Stranglehold: Style and Grace and 9mms
We talk about style in Stranglehold a lot. And when you’re making a game with John Woo, you learn just how important style is to him. Everything in his films is stylish. The camera angles. The slow-motion. The “bullet-ballet” gunfights. Everything is choreographed and cinematic and stylish as hell. So naturally style has become really important to us on Stranglehold.
It would be one thing to make a standard action game that was book-ended with Woo-style cinematics. In fact, it would probably be pretty easy. But that’s not the game we wanted to make. We wanted to make a game that was true to the Woo-style, and that means putting the style into the gameplay itself. We want to not only make it easy for you to be stylish in your playing, but really reward you when you do big crazy Woo-style stunts.
So how do we do this? Well first off we make it really easy to be stylish in Stranglehold. The left-trigger is a multipurpose “do cool stuff” button. If you’re running and you pull the trigger, you’ll dive. If you’re near a banister it will light up – pull the trigger and you’ll slide down the banister! If you’re near a chandelier it will light up – pull the trigger and you’ll dive out and grab the chandelier, swinging high above your enemies!
And of course the right trigger is the “make things dead” button. Pull the right trigger and you’ll fire your guns… just like in every other shooter. But unlike every other shooter, when the game detects that you’re doing cool stuff, you’ll enter into “Tequila-Time.” That’s our clever name for the slow-mo in the game, during which you can dodge bullets and take that little bit of extra time to line up your shots.
And here’s where we get to the rewards. One of the big new features of Stranglehold is that we reward you for doing the cool stuff with “style points.” The cooler the stunt you’re doing as you kill enemies, and the more enemies you kill at once, the more style points you get. So what do you do with all these style points, you say? Well you use the style to either regain a little bit of health (the cheapest option), or you can unleash the three big Tequila Bombs.
Not only does Stranglehold let you do big crazy action-movie stunts, but we also give you prizes for doing so. It’s a little bit like giving the kid who eats all his cake extra ice-cream. Because… you know… cake and ice cream are good, but even better together!
