I noticed on the single-player character select screen (where Liu Kang and Kung Lao are available from the start) some silhouettes of other characters. Are these guys playable in single player/ko-op mode?

Yes, those characters are Scorpion and Sub-Zero. They can be unlocked by beating story mode with Liu Kang and Kung Lao respectively.

Next question, do you have to play as Liu Kang to Unlock them both? Or can you use Kung Lao again, cause I bloody hate Liu Kang, all that wha, whada, whabababea, does my head in.

DOH!!!!  . I had a feeling that was the answer, and worst thing is that I need to play as my most hated fighter to unlock my favourite male fighter, argghhh! I guess some sacrifices have to be made sometimes.

Yep. Dmr2hn1 is right. But if you can get a friend and play co-op mode, you'll unlock both when you complete the game and you can unlock stuff that you wouldn't get in single player mode.

It is possible to play as other characters you normally cannot play with in single player and/or ko-op. You'll need a cheating device to do this however.

Yep, that's right. Only if you beat the game with Liu Kang and/or Kung Lao do you get anything after beating Kahn.

it's easy with both
with liu kang use the "Bycickle Kick/Flaying Kick"
with Kung lao use his "diving kicks(with upgrade)"
