Shaolin Monks is really just a big "what If" story. The main "what if" is quite simple really: What if Shang Tsung survived his battle with Liu Kang in the first Mortal Kombat tournament.
As any of you know, quite a lot of things got whacked out of proportion due to Shang Tsung's blatant wimpiness. What with the spells, the deaths and the craziness, HOY GLAVEN (little Jerry Lewis there.)
I can really agree with Dmr2hn1 about Quan-Chi about his little theory. Obviously, with all the chaos that ensued and kombatants still fighting, I can see Quan Chi taking advantage of the chaos and getting straight to work on gettin' dem derned ancient secrets.

Shang Tsung did survive MK1. The story screen in MK2 proves that. Right?

If you'll remember, Liu Kang "supposedly" killed Shang Tsung. Only, surprise! He survived to fight another day.
However, as Shaolin Monks shows us, if Tsung had instead fled Liu Kang's attack, that would've caused more complications for our heroes. Instead of Shao Kahn doing what he did in Mortal Kombat II, his efforts would've been focused on eliminating opposing forces BEFORE proceeding with his plan to invade Earthrealm.
As I've said before, Quan Chi might've taken advantage of the complications to go ahead with his plans and get those nice looking tattoos.

I don't find any offcial and canon source saying Shang Tsung was supposedly killed.

The thing is,When Sub-Zero got it back from Shinnok,He probably gave it to Raiden.Raiden probably lost it in MK1.Shang Tsung gets it for Shao Kahn,Quan Chi gets it.Simple.

He gave it to Raiden.
And that makes sense.

Dmr2hn1 posted: ...makes sense a lot. I wanted to post this to Mortal Kombat General Discussion as it is viewed more but this is about MKSM so I had to post it here.
Anyways, as we all know, Quan Chi comes to Shao Kahn's arena at the end and picks up the Sacred Amulet from Shao Kahn's remains. Nearly everyone said that this makes no sense. Nearly everyone who said it, was wrong. It has been said nearly a hundred times that the portals between Earthrealm and Outworld are locked tight and they can only be unlocked by the unbalancing of the Furies which is through Mortal Kombat tournament which Shao Kahn didn't win. So, how did he unlock it? Of course, by using an ancient artifact that can open inter-realm gates: Shinnok's Amulet.
But Shao Kahn never died except in Deadly Alliance but he comes back. He always comes back. So in MKSM he was thought to be dead and returned in MK3. Am I missing something?

Yes. It was Shao Kahn's clone in MKDA.

Oh, come on.
Whenever someone dies in the Kombat universe, the death is either...
#1 - Faked
#2 - Killed, but brought back to life
#3 - Sliced in half, but stapled back together
#4 - Real kombatant dies, but clone takes over in its place
#5 - Thought to be dead, but turns out the kombatant survived after all
#6 - See #2, but in zombie form.
#7 - See #2, but becomes evil
Saying someone dies in the kombat universe is like saying the earth is flat.
Or maybe it's like saying that Michael Moore has integrity.
No, it's like saying Jon Vogel can actually write endings for Armageddon that leave us satisfied.
In any case, Shaolin Monks is just a revisionist story of the first Mortal Kombat and... well... pretty much a majority of the established kombat universe.

I still can't see an official source saying Shang Tsung was "killed".

The only thing Im gonna say regarding Quan Chi's appearance in MKSM was that it was really random. I remember lookin at everybody dancin and stuff and then all of a sudden lookin at Quan Chi and sayin, "what the hell"?

Deadmanjr04 posted: It does make sense but then it still doesnt go with the MK story because in the third tournament Kahn is back and Quan Chi was still not around until after then next two tournaments which was Ultimate and Trilogy, then when MK4 came he finally showed his face. After all, the game takes place around MK2 that is what I think it doesnt really make sense for him to appear randomly. I enjoyed the ending but it was like wait a sec...
MK3, UMK3 and MKT are the same tournaments.
Judging from his looks in MKSM, there might be an involvement of time-travel, though.
well if he hasnt hes worn the same clothes for more than 10 years.....ewww
And somebody before mentioned that a lot of stuff in MkSM is non-canon. Please elaborate.
