I find some characters very weak, but some extraordinarily strong (besides Bosses). This is strange; I thought the game should make everyone equal.
For example, Lt. Sonya Blade is very weak; her attacks don't cause much damage, and all her special moves are feeble.
Quite the contrary, Hsu Hao is very powerful. His SUMO hits easily snatch away 20-30 points from the opponents, e.g.
Lets Play 1,2,2
Champion Sumo 1,2,3
Steel Headbutt 1,2,4
If these moves are done after "Charging up", they cause damage as many as 45-50 points - half of opponent's blood!
Moreover, the 'success rate' of Hsu Hao's special moves is high (in Wii), especially his Thunder Klap (B,F) and Krystal Lazer (HCAL). I abuse these special moves all the time, and quickly defeat other characters, including Blaze.
Hsu Hao's Thunder Klap is similar to Shao Kahn's Charging Spikes, but even more effective. Shao Kahn is so slow!
To me, Hsu Hao, Drahmin and Kintaro are on the top of my list of the toughest. What do you think?
p.s. I'm not talking about 'favorite' characters or their storylines. I am talking about Arcade and their moves.

Yes, you're right. I don't know how to use Sonya. It's difficult for me to use her to complete the Arcade even in the Easy mode.
The other example is Bo'Rai Cho... most of his hits are powerless, while Hsu Hao's attacks are very destructive!!
By the way, Hsu Hao's Boot Kamp (D, U) is also crap. I never use it.

Some characters were altered for the changing times in MKA after being absent in MKD, but Sonya was not one of them in my opinion. As for Hsu Hao, yeah he was powerful if you knew how to use him.

Look in the controller set up to see what the numbers are.
He does have very damaging combo but there is so much delay if it whiffs or is block. He is one of the worse characters in the game.
The truth is many characters have combos that go to 30-40% in this game. Noob has 2,4, stars 2,1,1, cs and it plants setting up a 50/50 mind game. Scorpion has weapon f1, spear, cs, 1, hellfire, free grab and is unbreakable after the f1. Mavado has a 54% combo with out charging up. In weapon 2,1,4, 1,1,4, 1,1,4 bf4. And there is many more.
Sonya has 2, cs, 1,1,u3 and that over 30 percent. And hits mid. She also has 2, 3, free grab. The only characters that have a hard time getting over 30% is frost, shang, kai, shujinko. They are also consider the worse characters in the game for competitive play.
Because a vast majority of the moves in this game are unsafe and parry able this game revolves around waiting for your opponent to attack ( turtleing ) and punishing them for it. The best characters in the game are diarou, drahmin, and sub zero with his ability to impale in the game.

Wow, so this is a comment from an expert!
I am a newbie and using very simple combo of Hsu-hao (only 3 keys) I can get 29-30% damage, so I consider him very good character. But I don't know combos which go over 40%... though I did see some doubtful clips in Youtube, where there are combos more than 100%.
Indeed, from time to time Hsu-hao gets parried. But Shao-kahn and Blaze are more parriable... (Mainly I play arcade in hard mode, but dare not try further)
You wrote "The best characters in the game are diarou, drahmin..." I am very interested in drahmin!! I find the success rate of his hits are high. Can you tell more of his strategy or combo? What makes you think he's one of the best? Thanks in advance!
